About Gary Hutchinson

Gary Hutchinson in field operations

Gary Hutchinson spent nearly two decades as a federal task force officer with DHS and DEA, and fifteen years as a senior criminal investigator for the State of Colorado. The work involved organized crime, human trafficking, and international drug trafficking. These were environments where poor judgment had permanent consequences and operational discipline was not a preference.

Across that career he led multi-agency operations, conducted over 1,500 interviews and interrogations, trained officers, and built operational systems to improve execution and accountability under pressure. Along the way he also managed one of the top-performing Starbucks locations in the country and developed an operational system that was adopted across stores worldwide. That experience confirmed what the investigative work had already taught him: sustainable results come from systems, not from working harder.

Blue Skies Consultancy grew out of all of that. High-consequence operations and organizational consulting draw on the same fundamentals: clear systems, honest communication, accountable leadership, and consistent execution when it matters most.

Current Writing

Gary is currently writing After the Leaving: Children, Belonging, and the Culture of Severance, a work of cultural nonfiction examining what happens when children and young adults are culturally encouraged to sever family bonds before they are mature enough to understand what those bonds are, what they owe them, and what their loss will cost. The book is grounded in attachment theory, developmental science, clinical research on family estrangement, and moral philosophy. It is written for thoughtful adult readers: parents, educators, clinicians, and anyone concerned about the fragmentation of the foundational bonds on which healthy development depends.

He also writes Operator Notes, the Blue Skies Consultancy blog, which covers operational leadership, organizational systems, and the practical challenges of building durable businesses. The posts are written from practice, not theory.

The Consulting Philosophy

Growth tends to expose whatever was informal. Systems that worked when the team was five people stop working when it is twenty-five. Leadership habits that were functional in one environment create friction in another. The work here lives in that gap.

The approach is direct. There is no standard program and no proprietary framework to sell. The work involves understanding how your organization actually functions, identifying what is creating friction or fragility, and building structures that allow it to operate more consistently.

The goal is organizational maturity. A business that runs well because it is built well, not because someone is carrying the load that the systems should be carrying.
